Aimlessly , so aimlessly
I ride the sea, our olive sea
I take the waves, approaching me
that slowly mount and crash~
they pull me out, beyond my height
and shove me down, with all their might
and spit me out, the lion's mouth
on glistening shores of glass.
It's not my fault that I can't surf
I bearly swim this dream I'm in
I've had before, and what is more
a life that's lacking truth.
Dreams spur me on, they make me wild
though middle aged, more like a child
when I wake up~ my body sings
hello again to youth~
I take the drive, it's not that far
down to the shore, there must be more
Stop in to check out longboards
at my friend's surfshop galore.
I'm 45 and though I strive
to maintain shaping, there's no escaping
that at the very time of this here taping
I may have weighed some more.
I do not think, I know I'd fail
to squeeze this body's blubbered whale
into any wetsuit made on Earth
by any stretch of a fisherman's tale.
I was, in highschool, a tiny pearl
a strong small waisted little girl
and what a waste, but still in haste
I dream to rip a curl!
I wandered out, stood in the stance
to watch the waves, as in a trance
no one was there, I do declare
to these ends I will be brave!
Before I go, don't go just yet
To meet my Makers, cold and wet
I'll paddle out, without regret
and set awhile beyond the breakers
It's not my fault that I can't surf
I bearly swim this dream I'm in
I have before, and what is more
but now i want the truth~
Dreams spur me on, they make me wild
and though I'm old, more like a child
when I wake up~ my body sings
hello again to youth~

This is beautiful imagery. It speaks to me of all the things we longed to do and for one reason or another never got to. I really hope you'll take the risk, don the suit, and paddle your butt out there - it's never too late to learn!
I reckon not ever too late...
Thanks!
I've always wanted to surf too. One day, when we're old and grey we'll mount the board and sail to shore.
hey...let's not wait.
gina...are you sure you have never surfed? you described a wipe out more excellently than I could have ever put it.
JohnB-
Thank you for the compliment. I grew up around the Jersey Shore and my mom, who loves the beach, would take us out on her hip as young as two years...so the feel of a wipe out is deeply imbedded in my memory. Also, many moons ago, I lived in San Diego near the beach and had been married to a surfer who discouraged me from trying it. Without being on a board I have been pounded by bigger waves in Cali. I have also enjoyed watching surfing documentaries.
you make me cry. There is still time. You go girl! WIPEOUT!!!!
Hey it's okay. I cried too when i wrote it. Don't pity the old woman... push her out into the surf and let her come rolling up at your feet again. I would love to get one of those parasailing things that you hang onto which pull you along with the wind while you stand on the surfboard. I am actually so psyched about it and getting into shape so the wipe outs don't kill me.
G- Let's go surfing with Jesus! He's the bomb! He's the author of FUN! We'll have FUN, FUN, FUN! He knows where the best surf is at all times.
